General Information for New Hires

  • You will be required to get a CatCard. The CatCard will give you access to certain buildings, will serve as a means of identitifying yourself. Optionally, it can be tied to your Wells Fargo account (for use as an ATM card), used to purchase from vending machines, and buy a discounted meal plan that approved vendors can use.

  • Get a parking permit if you want one. If you want a "Zone 1" lot (least expensive on campus), then you will probably need to get on a waiting list. There are some outlying lots from which you can ride the shuttle, and if you live within the "corridor" you may be able to ride a shuttle close to your house. You can pay more, and get a spot in a parking garage. The Parking and Transportation office will ticket you mercilessly if you park without tags, the city of Tucson will ticket you mercilessly if you park on roads in the neighbourhood's surrounding campus, and you risk towing if you park at McDonald's, WellsFargo, Bruegger's, etc.

  • Ask your supervisor which keys you need, then have Grisela Koeppen fill out a key request form for you using those key numbers. You will need a CatCard as they will use this to track the keys issued to you (they will photocopy your CatCard). Grisela will then forward the key request to the Steward Observatory business office for you.

  • If you need a phone, then ask Grisela. She should also be able to provide you with a hardcopy of the user guide to voicemail (available here along with some other phone documents). All University campus numbers begin with 626, or 621; you can dial any number without hitting "9" first; some numbers (long-distance) will require that you have a five digit billing code.

  • Talk to Becky Bayer about how to fill out your timecard.

  • You can get office supplies in room 557. It is on the fifth floor across from Becky's office.

  • Request an IssueTrak user id from the IssueTrak administrator so you can submit service requests for computer problems and telescope problems. Provide your full name and email address when making the request.

  • Visit http://netid.arizona.edu to get a NetID (a campus wide user id). With it you can access Employee Link, to do things such as change your personal information (PAF), view your benefits, etc.

  • If you want to use a wireless card in your laptop on campus, check out this campus wireless information page, where they will walk you through the steps to configuring the machine, and setting up the VPN software (if you need it). This should allow you to use your laptop in the Student Union as well as some other common areas. I think some departments still run there own wireless networks, so you may also want to ask your co-workers to see how others are doing it.

Official LBT Documentation Templates

All LBTO official documents such as specifications, requirements, designs, engineering drawings, test procedures, test results, etc. must be archived in the Category, Assembly, Number (CAN) using one of the standard CAN template file types.
